I was at this auction in Ohio, pretty standard stuff, mostly late-model cars and trucks. The auctioneer was this older guy, been doing it forever, knew his stuff. He was running through the cars, rapid-fire, spitting out details like a machine gun. Then this beat-up old minivan rolled up, probably a '90s model.
The auctioneer takes one look at this thing and just starts laughing. I mean, full-on belly laughing. He stops the whole auction, wipes the tears from his eyes, and says, “Folks, I've seen some junkers in my day, but this one takes the cake!” He goes on to roast this minivan for a good five minutes, making jokes about its missing hubcaps, the duct tape holding the bumper on, the whole deal.
The crowd was loving it. People were howling with laughter. But here's the thing: when he finally started the bidding, that minivan sold for more than it was probably worth! I guess all that attention, even if it was good-natured ribbing, got people interested. It just goes to show, a little bit of personality can go a long way in this business. Sometimes, it's not just about the car, it's about the show.
